HOT NEWS!
City of Waxahachie to Hold Hazardous Household Waste and Electronic Waste Collection Day
The City of Waxahachie is giving its citizens an opportunity to dispose of unwanted hazardous items and help the environment at the same time. On Saturday, April 24 from 9-11 a.m., the city will hold a Hazardous Household Waste and Electronic Waste (E-Waste) Collection Day.

In a partnership with the City of Fort Worth's Environmental Collection Center (ECC), Crud Cruiser (Mobile Unit) and Goodwill, Waxahachie residents will have the chance to dispose of hazardous household waste and E-Waste. These items include objects and substances not allowed to be placed in regular residential trash pick up.

The event will be held at the Citizens' Convenience Station, located at 499 Lions Park Road.

Hazardous household waste includes items such as paint, stain and thinners, motor oil and filters, cleaning supplies, antifreeze and batteries (all kinds, including car batteries).

Included in the E-Waste disposal are computers and parts, small appliances, cell phones, VCRs, radio equipment, telephones and printers.

For a complete list of acceptable items please visit www.waxahachie.com and click on the Environmental Health Department link.

This marks the fifth time the City has held this event, which has been increasingly successful. "This is a great opportunity for citizens to dispose of or recycle their unwanted items in an environmentally safe manner. We hope lots of residents will take advantage of the event, just like in the past," said Sonny Wilson, Director of Health for the City.

In addition to the upcoming event, the City is also in its tenth year of offering an ongoing recycling program through both curbside pickup and drop-off at the Citizens' Convenience Station.  Regular residential trash pickup is offered twice a week, with one of those days being designated for recycling pickup. Items that may be included in curbside recycling are newspapers, magazines, plastics, cans, and glass. Citizens who reside in apartments may use the Citizens' Convenience Station to drop off the same recyclables that are collected from residential single-family households. Bins are supplied at the station to separate each recyclable into.

The Convenience Station, 499 Lions Park Road,  is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.

Periodically, regulations and environmental laws cause revisions to these recycling procedures. Citizens with questions about any of the procedures or recyclable items should contact the City of Waxahachie Environmental Health Department at 972-937-7330, extension 151, or IESI Disposal Services, Inc. at 972-937-8836.

HOT NEWS!
IMPACT WAXAHACHIE, WAXAHACHIE GROUPS SPEAK OUT ABOUT SOCIAL HOSTING AND UNDERAGE DRINKING
Impact Waxahachie                                                                                                        WAXAHACHIE  - Local residents and members of IMPACT Waxahachie will launch a media campaign about how serving alcohol to young people affects our community and what adults can do to help prevent it.

A family oriented public kick off event will be held at the Waxahachie High School Parking Lot near the Fine Arts Center entrance (1000 N. Highway 77, Waxahachie, TX 75165) on Saturday, April 10th  from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

The event will feature entertainment by the Waxahachie High School Drum Line, interactive displays by Waxahachie Police, Waxahachie Fire, and Ellis County Sheriff's Office, and food giveaways by Chik-Fil-A of Waxahachie. The event kicks off the Second Annual Those Who Host Lose the Most campaign that educates adults on the legal, health and social consequences of underage drinking.

Each year, alcohol kills 6 ½ times more young people than all other illegal drugs combined. In addition, students who use alcohol during adolescence have a reduced ability to learn, compared with those youth who do not drink until adulthood. Some studies reveal up to a 10% decrease in learning ability for adolescents who drink even occasionally.

Featured speaker for the event, Ellis County Judge Carol Bush, reports "Students are at risk of academic, social, emotional and physical consequences as a result of underage drinking.  Unfortunately, the number one source of alcohol for students is parents and other adults."

The event is sponsored by:  Drug Prevention Resources Inc. and IMPACT Waxahachie.  Those Who Host Lose the Most is based on a program of the Drug-Free Action Alliance.
"Don't be a party to underage drinking. It's against the law."

HOT NEWS!
Rain Barrel Class Available
Through City of Waxahachie

City of Waxahachie
(March 19, 2010) More than ever, people are becoming interested in protecting our water supply. One of the easiest and most efficient ways to conserve water is the use of rain barrels.

During a good rain, a rain barrel can be filled in just a matter of minutes.  The water harvested in a rain barrel can be used to water outdoor plants, flower beds and small lawns.

The City of Waxahachie's Parks and Recreation Department, in conjunction with the Ellis County Master Gardeners, have planned a class to instruct residents on how to construct a rain barrel.  The class will be held Monday, April 12 at 6:30pm at the Parks and Recreation Building at 401 S. Elm. The class will also discuss water conservation and some of the benefits to using captured rainwater.
The cost of the class is $30 per person. All materials will be provided, and at the end of class each participant will take home a completed rain barrel. The deadline to register is April 5th. Space is limited to 20 participants on a first come, first served basis. Those interested may register in person at City Hall, 401 S. Rogers, in the Utility Billing Department downstairs.
For more information please contact John Smith, Parks and Recreation Director, at 972-937-7330, ext. 181, or Amy Hollywood, Community Relations Manager, at 972-937-7330, ext. 284.
